The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Ocean Conservation.
Lot 131:
Description
Chromogenic print, Jaws film still (Universal, 1975). Susan Backlinie as Chrissie Watkins in the opening attack sequence. The print is housed in a clear plastic protective sleeve with a black backing board. 11 3/8" x 14 3/8".
The Edith Blake photographs (Lots 129 – 131)
Edith Blake (1925–2023) wrote and took pictures for the Vineyard Gazette and had insider access to the JAWS set throughout the summer of 1974. Her photographs, long circulated as anonymous production stills, are credited to her here. They are in color, with the warm patina of fifty years.
The opening of JAWS, Chrissie Watkins’s midnight swim, and arguably the most gripping scene in the film. Photographed by Edith Blake, this print hung over Peter’s desk for more than thirty years, and its color has faded the way a picture does when a writer looks at it every day.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund.
Condition report:
The print shows significant age-related color shifting and fading, resulting in a pale, yellowish-green tonal cast throughout the image. Visible surface abrasions and horizontal creases are present near the center of the print. There is noticeable discoloration and yellowing along the top and right edges.
