Description
Group of antique advertising stoneware, folk art, and metalware objects. The dark brown stoneware advertising canteen features embossed text for B.W. Hooper & Bro. of Nashville, Tennessee, finished in an Albany-type slip glaze with a single side handle. A small cream-colored pottery pitcher displays a black slip-painted bird decoration over a red clay body. The dark-stained wooden charitable wall box is carved with cross and quatrefoil motifs. A cast metal bear boot scraper is mounted on a wooden base. The primitive bag is constructed from interwoven bark strips with a toggle closure and woven shoulder straps. The Jens Quistgaard tiered candlestick is marked on the underside. Largest piece: 12" H x 10" W x 5" D.
From the Woodstock, New York estate of music manager Albert Grossman, best known for managing artists including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
Condition report:
Minor glaze drips are visible on the shoulder of the stoneware flask, which also shows wear to its unglazed base. The pottery pitcher has a significant chip on the base rim that reveals the red clay body. The wooden alms box displays wood loss on the top rear edge and frayed rope segments on the back. Surface oxidation is present on the cast iron silhouette. The woven birch bark bag shows brittleness and fraying, including broken straps. Wax residue remains in the candle cups and on the base of the candelabrum. The candelabrum stem is bent.
