Description
Leather & Hall alligator skin travel vanity case. The rectangular hard-sided dressing case is constructed of dark brown alligator skin and a copper-tone moiré fabric interior. The case is designed with a hinged lid, a central handle, and two brass-tone double-lever locks. The exterior retains several historical travel labels including a French Line shipping tag, a U.S. Customs Service inspection sticker, and remnants of hotel labels from Chamonix for the Grand Hotel Mont-Blanc and Imperial & Palace hotels. The interior includes various elasticized pouches and loops for grooming accessories, along with a larger document or mirror pocket on the lid. Marked on the interior front edge Leather & Hall London and Sheffield. 7 1/2" H x 18" W x 13" D.
From the Woodstock, New York estate of music manager Albert Grossman, best known for managing artists including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
Condition report:
The case is in fair condition with significant signs of age and use. The alligator skin shows widespread dryness, cracking, and peeling along the corners and edges. The handle is compromised with the leather covering splitting and separating. The brass-tone hardware exhibits heavy patina, surface scratches, and areas of green oxidation, and does not shut properly. The interior fabric lining has visible staining and darkening, particularly to the base and pockets. There is a significant area of missing leather and lining in one top corner. Historical paper labels are torn, faded, and partially abraded.
