Description
Two early 19th century needlepoints, both signed and dated by the makers. One poem sampler signed ESMA Broadhurst, 1837. Sight: 17 x 13 in. Frame: 24 1/2 x 20 1/2 in. One alphabet and moralizing verse signed Maria Westfall, 1814. Fragment: 12 3/4 x 9 in. Frame: 20 1/2 x 16 3/8 in.
From the Woodstock, New York estate of music manager Albert Grossman, best known for managing artists including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
Condition report:
The 1837 sampler displays a significant vertical loss and tear to the lower right corner. Both samplers show overall foxing, discoloration, and fading to the linen supports and silk threads. The 1814 piece is an irregular fragment with frayed and irregular edges. The white paper mount and the verso paper backing of the 1814 sampler show heavy water staining along the lower edge. The black-painted frame exhibits moderate paint loss and surface scuffing, while the figured maple frame shows light surface wear to the edges.
