The Gentleman's Collection
Lot 14:
Description
An assortment of historical artifacts consisting of two clay tavern pipes and three military-related items. The pipes are long-stemmed white clay tavern pipes, one featuring heavy carbonization and charring to the interior bowl and rim, and the second showing light charring. Both bowls possess a small spur at the base and straight, tapered stems. The lot also includes two Civil War era lead projectiles: one spherical .69 caliber musket ball with a white lead carbonate patina and surface deformation, and one conical lead projectile with heavy reddish-orange oxidation and soil crust. Also included is a miniature novelty pinfire revolver fob with a break-action barrel, folding trigger, and embossed floral scrollwork grips. The miniature firearm features a lanyard ring at the base of the grip. Unsigned. Pipes 16" L; Miniature revolver 1 1/2" L.
Location: 6D
Condition report:
Both clay pipes exhibit surface staining and minor pitting consistent with long-term storage or burial; one pipe bowl has a small chip to the rim. The lead musket ball shows deep oxidation and impact-related surface distortion. The conical lead projectile is heavily encrusted with soil and oxidation, obscuring its original form. The miniature revolver shows surface oxidation and metal pitting throughout with wear to the silver-plated finish; the action appears functional.
